December is one of the rare months of the year that there is little to do with the flowers. Other than lisianthus, which I have started growing indoors, all my other seeds will be started in January. At this point, I am just managing the already planted flowers as the temperatures fluctuate. On colder days, they need to be covered with frost blankets and then they are removed on the warmer days (above 45 degrees).
I am also managing the irrigation through the temperatures as well. Any time it is going to dip below freezing I have to turn off the irrigation and drain the lines as best I can in hopes of avoiding the lines bursting from frozen water. It is a bit tedious, but it’s nice to be forced to get out into the fresh air.
After the holidays, it will be time to start hundreds- likely thousands when I really think about it- of seeds indoors so this little lull is appreciated.
