What a busy spring season the bees have been having! In May, I was able to bring my observation hive into several classrooms, totaling more than 150 students that got to see the bees up close and learn all about the life cycle and importance of the honey bee. This observation hive was purchased using donations from the seasonal flower subscription.
In June, we had a mysterious case of a missing queen in one of the hives for several weeks. It turned out, she took a wrong turn when she was returning from her mating flight and started building a hive underneath the actual hive. Once she was located, I was able to send her up into the actual hive where she could continue laying eggs in a much roomier space.
This year will be my first year harvesting honey from my hives. There is an entire box- ten frames in total- that are nearly all capped and ready to be harvested. I plan to share the honey with those who receive flower deliveries. More on that in July!
